Architects are the one who creates amazing buildings and structures. Skyscrapers in metro cities would not have been possible without them. India as a developing country has lots of scope for quality Architects. Career in Architecture is attractive, high paying, and has lots of potential in terms of growth.
A bachelor’s degree in architecture (B.Arch) or Diploma in architecture is needed to become a qualified architect. The B.Arch degree programme is of 5 years duration and includes a period of practical experience.
Subject content of B.Arch course includes architectural design (drawing and painting), acoustics, surveying and leveling, estimating and costing, methods of construction, materials management, history of architecture, draftsmanship, environmental planning, applied mechanics, structural designing, computer applications etc. Some colleges teach architecture-related software packages such as AutoCAD and 3D Studio Max.
The basic eligibility criteria to pursue B.Arch is 10+2 (senior secondary Class XII) with a minimum of 50% marks in Science subjects (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics). Besides this, the candidate must qualify an entrance examination. Commerce or Arts students can also pursue B.Arch only if they have opted for Maths & English.
Entrance Exams : To take admission in this 5 years of B.Arch degree, one need to clear the entrance Exams.
The CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education ) conducts a national level entrance examination- All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) on an All India basis for entry to undergraduate programmes in B. Architecture and B. Planning in government and private institutes.
The National Aptitude test in Architecture (NATA), the online test with drawing exam is conducted by the National Institute of Advanced Studies and Architecture in association with the Council of Architecture (COA).
Entrance to architecture programmes at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT’s) is through the national level Joint Entrance Examination (JEE).
Working Areas :
Architecture Designer : Architects can work with construction companies wherein they are asked to serve as a designer.
Architecture Engineer : Most of the jobs in architecture come up in government organizations such as Public Works Department, the Archaeological Department, Ministry of Defense, National Building Organization, Town and Country Planning Organization, National Institute of Urban Affairs, Departments of Railways, Post and Telegraphs, Public Sector Undertakings, Housing and Urban Development Corporation, National Building Construction Corporation Ltd., etc. While some other organizations or bodies like State Departments, Housing Boards, Local Bodies for construction works, Builders, Architecture Firms, Consultants, etc. also hire architects.
Interior Designer : Trained professionals can work with interior designing firms offering services in serene interiors, home interior, bedroom interior, bathroom interior, kitchen, furniture designing, etc.
